Injection/Depo Provera

SUMMARY

  • Also called “Depo” or “DMPA”
  • An injection given by a nurse or doctor every 12 weeks (around 3 months).
  • Contains the hormone progestogen, which helps prevent pregnancy.

How it works

  • Stops sperm from reaching the egg.
  • Can also stop eggs from being released by the ovaries.

Effectiveness

  • With perfect use, it’s around 99% effective.
  • With typical use, it’s about 94% effective.
  • It can take up to 7 days to start working, so another form of contraception may be needed during this time.

Advantages

  • Each injection provides protection for 12 weeks, so you don’t have to think about contraception every day.
  • Can help manage periods, and for some people, periods may stop altogether.
  • Sometimes used as a temporary method while waiting to start another form of contraception.

Things to keep in mind

  • You’ll need to see a health professional every 12 weeks for the injection.
  • It doesn’t protect against STIs, so condoms may still be needed.
  • Some people experience weight gain, changes in periods, or other side effects.
  • Your periods may become irregular, lighter, heavier, or stop altogether.

Will anyone know I’m using it?

  • A small mark might be visible at the injection site on the day you get the shot, but this usually fades.
  • Period changes may also give an indication you’re using hormonal contraception.

Could someone tamper with it?

No. Once the injection has been given, it can’t be tampered with until the 12 weeks have passed.
